Welcome to Lost and Safe!

The HUG-A-TREE and SURVIVE Program was started in San Diego, California in 1981 after a search for a nine-year-old boy who died in the local mountains. A group of those searchers put together an assembly program for children on how not to get lost, how to stay comfortable if they do get lost, and how to be spotted and found. We hope your children never need this knowledge, but if you discuss this information with your children, it may help them remember one or more facts that will make the search short and successful.

Although originally designed for children whose ages range between five and fifteen, this program has been presented to adults involved in the Hunting Safety Course presented by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

The Lost and Safe program was developed by retired Reserve Lt. Don Abney of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office. He felt the need to provide additional information to help keep our children safe. In addition to remaining safe when lost in the wilderness, the Lost and Safe program extends that safety to urban areas. Children are taught what procedures to follow when lost in a Shopping Mall, how to defend against a Human Predator, Safe Internet “Chat,” and how to greet a Police Service Dog.

This program is kept simple, yet very useful for both the person that is lost and the searchers that are looking for them. Lt. Abney's pleasant and friendly presentation is designed to teach important information that will help to keep a child alive and safe. This FREE program is available to schools, church groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and any group or organization within a 125 mile radius of Abita Springs, LA, that can assemble between 10 and 1000 children for the presentation. Adults are invited and encouraged to attend the presentation to understand the concepts that are being taught to their children.
Programs beyond 125 mile radius must pay expenses.
